How I Knew My Skin Barrier Was Totally Shot – and How I Fixed It

Okay, real talk — my skin barrier was done, and I didn’t even know. One day, my face was glowing. The next? Everything I put on felt like it was burning me. My skin was tight, flaky, red, and just plain sad. I thought piling on more products would fix it. Nope. I was actually making it worse .
If your skin’s been acting up no matter what you do, this story is for you.
🔍 The Red Flags I Ignored (But You Shouldn’t)
- My face felt dry and tight even after moisturising
- Toners and serums suddenly stung like crazy
- Random breakouts showed up (like, why now?)
- Red patches popped up, especially around my nose
- Flaky but oily? Yeah, confusing as hell
At first, I thought I just needed to exfoliate more or get a new serum. Spoiler: I was wrong.
What Was I Doing Wrong?
- Using way too many acids — like salicylic and glycolic acid back-to-back
- Skipping moisturiser because I thought my oily skin didn’t need it
- Using cleansers and toners with alcohol or fragrance that wrecked my skin
- Jumping from one trendy product to the next without giving my skin a break
Basically, I was throwing everything but the kitchen sink at my face and expecting magic.

How I Turned It Around (Without Breaking the Bank)
1.
I stopped all the “extras”
No acids, no peels, no new products. I kept it super simple: cleanse, moisturise, sunscreen.
2.
Switched to gentle, budget-friendly products
- Epimax Baby Wash from Dischem (gentle, no nasties, around R70)
- Oh So Heavenly Barrier Balm (love how it seals in moisture)
- Castor oil on dry spots at night — cheap and effective!
- Bramley Rose Water Mist (found at Pep for about R30) — perfect for calming
All of these fit nicely into my R250 wellness routine — so no excuses!
The New Rules I Live By Now
- No more 5-step serums every night — keep it chill
- Sunscreen every day, rain or shine, inside or outside (yes, even when you’re at home!)
- Exfoliate once or twice a week max — not every day
- Listen to your skin, not the hype
